FAQ

What is the Big Red Kidney Walk?

The Big Red Kidney Walk is Kidney Health Australia’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Across September thousands of Australians unite together in red and walk to support people living with kidney disease. You can take part in our 5 flagship events in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, or sign up to host a local walk in your home town.

When is the Big Red Kidney Walk?

The five flagship walks will take place on Sunday, 8 September 2019. If you can’t make 8 September, we also encourage you to hold your own Big Red Kidney Walk during September where you can choose the date and location.

Who can participate in the Big Red Kidney Walk?

Anyone can participate in the Big Red Kidney Walk. Children under the age of 6 are free, and dogs are also welcome.

Event day

What time should I arrive on the day?

We encourage all walkers to arrive around 45 minutes before the start time. This allows you to check in, visit the different tents and get your friends together for the start line. There is also speeches and entertainment before the walk commences.

What are the course options? Where does it go?

The courses and distances vary, but there will always be a short walk and a longer walk option available at each location. Check the event pages for all the details of your chosen event including course maps and exact distances. You’ll find the list of events here.

Is the course wheelchair/pram friendly?

Yes! We encourage you to bring along family members of all ages so ensure the tracks can cater for these.

Will I be timed?

As the walks are non-competitive they will not be timed.

Do I need to supply identification on race day?

Yes, if your race pack hasn't been sent to you in advance you will need photo ID in order to collect your registration pack on the day. Please bring a copy of your driver’s licence, senior’s card or student card.

I haven’t received my bib. Can I pick one up on the day?

Yes, we will have spare bibs available at each of our major walks. Please remember to bring photo ID to collect your bib.

Can I park at the event?

There is parking at each location, however, it is limited so we recommend that you carpool or catch public transport where possible.

Is there accessible parking?

Yes, but it is also limited. Only vehicles displaying a Disability Sticker will have access to these spaces. Please contact Kidney Health Australia at events@kidney.org.au to pre-register for an accessible parking space so we can make sure your needs are met.

What should I wear?

We strongly recommend comfortable clothes and closed toe shoes. Think about what you might wear at the gym. As it is the Big Red Kidney Walk, we encourage you to wear red and of course, fancy dress is always encouraged!

Is the event weather dependent?

There is a wet weather plan in place so it won’t be cancelled for a little bit of rain, be sure to check the weather forecast and come prepared for the elements. Safety is our number one priority. The race will be cancelled in extreme weather conditions or if it becomes unsafe. We will put notifications on the website, phone-line and Facebook if it is cancelled, and you will get an SMS alerting you about it too if you have supplied us with a mobile contact.

Can I walk with my dog?

We are SUPER excited to say that YES dogs are welcome to all Big Red Kidney Walk events in 2019! Just be sure to include your pooch as part of the registration process and take note of the terms and conditions for having your buddy there.

Will medical support be available along the course?

First aid teams will be located at the event village. If you have a need for them please make yourself known to either them or a course marshal.

I can't make the race. Are there other ways I can help?

Of course! There are a number of ways you can help out:

  • Organise your own Big Red Kidney Walk with friends or colleagues on a day that suits you;
  • Give our Volunteer Coordinator a call on 1800 464 363 to see how you can help out before the event.
